Michael Cocuzza, Chief Technical Officer and Founder of Enviro Power, LLC, told Innovation Destination Hartford about the startup’s innovative products and the ways it is working to make a social impact.
INNOVATION DESTINATION HARTFORD: When and why did you start your company?
MICHAEL COCUZZA: The company was founded in 2013.
IDH: How did you develop the business concept?
COCUZZA: My background is in the power industry. As more and more electrical energy becomes distributed (think of solar, wind, etc.) I thought there had to be a way to make an affordable on-site solution that had high efficiency and could reach the mass markets.
That is exactly what we have created. Our SmartWatt Boiler is a high-efficiency hot water boiler that outputs electricity, helps to reduce energy bills and greenhouse gases, and provides secure electricity on site.
IDH: Describe your company and the ways in which you are making a social impact.
COCUZZA: Our SmartWatt Boilers can help reduce the burden of high-energy bills consumers have been seeing over the past decade, help reduce the impact that greenhouse gases are having on climate change, and provide energy security to an ageing electrical infrastructure.
COCUZZA: I constantly look for ways to raise awareness about the products we are bringing to market. reSET was an easy choice. The organization’s mission to help spread the entrepreneurial spirit here in Connecticut is evident. reSET has provided a great platform for small companies to share their ambitions and have a loud voice that may otherwise not be heard.
IDH: What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a startup?
COCUZZA: Our company is capital intensive; our hardest challenges have been finding capital to help grow through early stage product adoption. Luckily, we have great founding partners, a great board, and great early-stage investors who believe in our mission and have helped position us for early success and rapid growth.
IDH: Where do you see your company in the next two to five years?
COCUZZA: We look to begin bringing our products for the commercial sector to market, as well as explore the use of alternative fuels such as biomass in the very short term. Longer term, 24 months out we look to explore the residential market and bring some other concepts that have the potential to transform the small-scale distributed energy markets.
We’ve already made a lot of progress as we enter the product commercialization phase. We recently moved the company to Main Street in Hartford and executed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the building’s owner. We’re effectively supplying heat and power commercially as we complete testing of the beta prototype unit.
Look for some very exciting technologies coming from Enviro Power over the next several years.
