Located on Main Street in Manchester, CT, the Axis901 co-working space is designed for business and social entrepreneurs, startups, innovators, designers and telecommuters who want to work in a collaborative space.
That kind of synergy is important to many Axis901 members. Manchester residents Chris Carvache and Carina Duffy both agree.
A SPACE FOR STARTUP INNOVATION
Carvache, who is Founder of web design startup company New Leaf Web Solutions and Chief Creative Officer at startup research company Sātto Technologies, lives near Axis901 and discovered the co-working space one day while running errands.
Carvache says he was familiar with the co-working concept because “I have some friends who are part of reSET and I have another friend who started a co-working space in Bridgeport.”
“I came in out of blatant curiosity and was shown around,” Carvache continued. “I thought it was cool and affordable and I liked that it was a small, tight-knit community.”
Carvache explained what ultimately drew him to the co-working space, “I like people. I like collaborating. I like building things. What better environment to come to than some place where most people are looking for the same thing?”
A SPACE FOR FEEDBACK AND INTERACTION
Duffy, a graphic designer, works part time for The Navigators, a worldwide Christian non-profit organization, and freelances with the rest of her time. She says she found Axis901 on Meetup by happenstance.
“I had career switched from sports medicine to graphic design and was working primarily from home,” she explains. “I’m an extreme extrovert, so I loved what I was doing and I loved freelancing and being on my own, but I hated doing it alone.”
Duffy turned to the web for help connecting with others. “I started searching Meetup for designers so I could get feedback on things and interact with more people every day,” she says. That’s how she found Axis901 on Meetup. “I had no idea there was a co-working space in Manchester.”
After touring Axis901, Duffy says, “I was really excited to be able to interact with more people on a daily basis and just be in a space where I can get feedback, contribute to other people and be able to bounce things off of people.”
The co-working space provided a good background for collaboration. It inspired Carvache and Duffy to launch a weekly networking event they call The Brew Crew.
“The idea behind it is that people can show up—not just Axis901 members, but people here on Main Street. They may be able to find a resource that Axis901 offers for their business. There are developers, graphic artists and legal professionals here and the community may not know that,” Carvache explained.
Innovation Destination: Hartford attended a summer Brew Crew event, which drew a diverse crowd of about a dozen attendees from startup CEOs to a veteran entrepreneur to graphic designers to a retired mechanic who was “looking for a place to fit in” and feedback for his patent idea. Mark Pellegrini, Director of Planning and Economic Development for the town of Manchester, and Heather Guerette, Community Development Program Manager for the town of Manchester also attended.
Carvache and (a)squaredstudio co-owner Alex Donovan gave an informal presentation entitled “State of the Web 2015,” in which audience members were encouraged to participate.
“Brew Crew events are meant to be casual and provide a topic of conversation so people who may not be extroverted can network and be preloaded knowing what to talk about and feel comfortable.”
The Brew Crew was the perfect end to a Friday afternoon—a cold beer, stimulating conversation and an opportunity to network with a community of startups, innovators and entrepreneurs.
