Where Are They Now? Follow Up with WEWOOL
Innovation Destination Hartford spoke with WEWOOL CEO and Founder Matt Siracusa in February 2017, when the startup was participating in the reSET Impact Accelerator. (Read the interview: Social Impact Startup with a Mission to Help the Homeless.)
IDH reached out to Matt for an update about the company.
INNOVATION DESTINATION HARTFORD: What’s new?
MATT SIRACUSA: WEWOOL is in a store called Denali Sports, which is very exciting! I met with Founder/CEO Chris Howe, who was immediately captivated by our mission. He wanted to carry a brand in his stores that’s making a difference in the world.
What’s new on a personal note—my wife and I are expecting baby girl #2 in April!
IDH: What did you gain from participating in the 2017 reSET accelerator?
MATT: I gained some valuable connections and I was also able to mentor a few young students in the process.
IDH: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned on your entrepreneurial journey?
MATT: The biggest lesson I’ve learned is there is always someone out there who knows more than I do and can speak wisdom in any situation.
IDH: Anything you wish you’d done differently?
MATT: I recently formed an advisory board consisting of business leaders who want to see WEWOOL succeed. I wish I’d done that sooner, because I spent far too long trying to figure things out on my own.
IDH: How are you building a customer base?
MATT: Through all social media channels, mostly Facebook through boosted posts. A lot of customers are referred to WEWOOL by other people who support the brand.
IDH: Tell us about the importance of supporting entrepreneurship Connecticut.
MATT: It’s extremely important for me, especially because, without small businesses thriving, I wouldn’t have local retail stores stocking my socks on their shelves. If they’re successful, the need for restocking helps fund my mission.
It works both ways. The more I’m out there promoting my brand and making the WEWOOL logo more recognizable, the more likely someone will actually pick up the socks and buy them from the aforementioned stores.
IDH: Aside from funding, what do you need most to move your company forward?
MATT: What I really need are motivated merchandising representatives who have a passion for what we’re doing and help us get into more stores.
IDH: What’s next?
MATT: Target, Cabelas, Wal-Mart, Dick’s Sporting Goods...what, am I not allowed to dream?! Like I said, once I find the right merchandising representatives, they will without a doubt be able to get my socks on the shelves of some major stores.
