Connecticut entrepreneur and inventor Eric Knight recently received a patent for technology to treat Alzheimer’s disease.
Entrepreneur, inventor and innovator Eric Knight has received a U.S. patent for technology he has invented to treat Alzheimer’s disease. He recently told Innovation Destination: Hartford about his invention.
Knight, who is Founder and President of Remarkable Technologies, Inc., hopes the invention will help keep Alzheimer’s disease from progressing—essentially changing the disease from a terminal illness into a more manageable one. For more information, visit www.alzheimerstreatmentInvention.com.
IDH: You’ve been working on this invention for more than five years. What inspired you to develop the technology?
KNIGHT: As an inventor, I enjoy taking on difficult challenges. By happenstance, years ago I came across research about experiments being performed on laboratory mice that had been bred to have Alzheimer’s disease. The experiments showed the benefit of particular radio waves at halting the progression of the disease in these animals. I was intrigued and started researching the topic further.
After studying the data, it appeared to me that the scientists may have uncovered a possible approach to this insidious disease. Like everyone, we all know friends or family members who have been stricken by this incurable illness. The combination of these factors inspired me to take on the challenge.
Through the resources of my company, I started performing R&D on a device that would be suitable for human treatment. I ultimately filed a patent on my invented technology. And, on May 19, I’m proud to say that I received a patent on my innovation.
IDH: Can you describe the invention and how it works?
KNIGHT: As you might imagine, it is a complicated combination of technology and underlying biological processes. And the biological processes are not yet fully understood; there is a lot of research that still needs to be done. Very generally speaking, the technology uses radio waves to stop beta-amalyoid plaques—what many scientists believe are a key contributor to Alzheimer’s disease—from accumulating in the brain.
IDH: Recently, NeuroEM Theraputics, Inc., a Phoenix, Arizona-based medical device research and development company, licensed your patent. Could you tell us a little more about that?
KNIGHT: This is a very exciting development. NeuroEM Therapeutics signed a non-exclusive, no-fee license agreement with my company. NeuroEM Therapeutics is headed up by renowned scientist, Dr. Gary Arendash. Dr. Arendash is widely recognized as the world leader in RF-based research for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Arendash is also the Senior Editor of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. So my company simply could not have a more credible inaugural patent licensee than Dr. Arendash and his medical company. It’s the first of what we hope to be many patent licenses in our multi-faceted effort to tackle this terrible disease.
It’s also important to note that NeuroEM Therapeutics has aggressive plans to initiate a Phase I clinical trial using this RF-based medical technology. It’s precisely this sort of pedal-down human research that is so critical in finding a cure.
IDH: The goal of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease is to have a plan to treat and end Alzheimer’s by 2025. How do you feel your invention will help?
KNIGHT: Based on the initial research, I believe the innovation has the potential to be a significant advancement—but many steps have to occur first, including clinical trials. Personally, I believe with concentrated attention of the world’s top minds and resources, we can do better than 2025. I intend to do what I can to bring that important horizon much closer.
