Founded by entrepreneur Erica White in 2015, RepVisits is on a mission to increase student awareness and access to higher education. The startup is one of 22 companies participating in reSET’s 2016 Accelerator program, which is designed for entrepreneurs in the early stages of business development.
INNOVATION DESTINATION HARTFORD: How did you develop the business concept for your startup?
WHITE: As a school counselor, my goal is to increase student exposure to higher education opportunities. RepVisits has proven to be the most effective way to increase the number of colleges that were visiting our high school, maximize the amount of time I had to work with students, and provide students the information needed to make informed decisions regarding their future.
IDH: When did the company launch and how has it evolved since?
WHITE: RepVisits began as a pilot in 2015 with 13 Connecticut high schools. Nine months after our launch, we are now working with 175 high schools from 30 different states. We also have 500 college admission representatives from 315 colleges in 29 states scheduling their high school visits through RepVisits.com. In addition, we are discussing the possibility of a pilot with international high schools in Mexico and China.
IDH: What types of services does your company provide?
WHITE: RepVisits brings high schools and college admission representatives together on one website to schedule appointments and organize college fairs.
IDH: Why did you get involved in reSET Accelerator program?
WHITE: I see the reSET Accelerator program as an amazing opportunity to network with like-minded entrepreneurs and to connect with the multitude of mentors and resources within the Hartford area. Essentially, I wanted to be surrounded by the movers and shakers within the region.
IDH: In what ways is your company making a social impact?
WHITE: The mission of RepVisits is to increase access to and completion of higher education by connecting school counselors and college admission representatives. RepVisits simplifies college recruitment planning, which allows school counselors and college admission representatives to get back to what they do best: supporting students.
Without access to information or support, we cannot assume students will understand their options or make decisions that will lead to post-secondary completion. Without higher education, we cannot expect our youth to become successful members of society who contribute to the overall prosperity of our nation.
By providing a streamlined system to connect colleges and high schools, we can increase exposure to the wealth of educational opportunities that exist and maximize the amount of time colleges and high schools have to help students make informed decisions regarding their future.
IDH: What is the best advice you have received?
WHITE: Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.
