Entrepreneur Jason Biondo founded his startup, Trekeffect, to make travel planning more convenient and create a collaborative social environment for people who travel together.
Innovation Destination Hartford asked Biondo to tell us about his company and its commitment to making a social impact.
IDH: When did you start your company and how did you develop the business concept?
BIONDO: I started working on Trekeffect three years ago. The idea was built out of my own frustration with current travel planning software. I was really frustrated with how much time it would take me to plan a trip and wanted a simpler solution. When travel planning, I would often resort to asking my friends and family about destinations while doing research online, but it usually would take me about a month to stitch the plan together before I was ready to travel. I wanted to create a solution that would let people build travel plans much faster.
IDH: Tell us about your company.
BIONDO: Trekeffect is the only travel planning marketplace that lets you build, buy, and sell travel plans. We make it easy for you to build your itinerary, collaborate with friends, and then sell your creations with the rest of the community. We currently have a prototype that lets you plan a trip and we are in the process of integrating the marketplace functionality.
IDH: Why did you become involved in reSET Accelerator program?
BIONDO: I got involved in reSET because I wanted to surround myself with mentors and other entrepreneurs who could provide me with feedback to help my business and to help me become a better entrepreneur. I also wanted to get more involved and discover what the Connecticut entrepreneurial ecosystem has to offer. I’ve been extremely impressed with the program so far.
IDH: In what ways is your company making a social impact?
BIONDO: Trekeffect is making a social impact by drastically changing the way people plan trips. The average person visits more than 22 different websites to plan their trip. With Trekeffect you no longer need to do that. We also create a collaborative social environment within the application so you no longer have to send emails back and forth with your friends to try to keep them in the loop with what places you want to visit or where you’ll be staying. Everything is tightly integrated within one application. This is important to me because it’s a problem that shouldn’t exist today. I believe that if we can provide people with the correct tools, they will be able to create new travel plans that extend well beyond the typical travel agency offerings.
IDH: What are your company’s goals for the next three to five years?
BIONDO: Our most important goal is to grow the community and to create value for people who love to travel. We want to be platform-independent and be able to penetrate an underserved market that hasn’t received a product of this kind.
