Connecticut’s beer industry continues to be a major boon to the state’s economy, according to a new study.
The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) and the Beer Institute on Wednesday said it conducted a joint study that shows Connecticut’s beer industry contributes $3.1 billion annually to the state’s economy.
That represents a major increase compared to the $745.7 million economic impact the industry generated in 2017, according to estimates provided by the Brewers Association, which represents two-thirds of breweries in Connecticut.
The study also said the industry supports 21,347 jobs in the state, which account for $1.1 billion a year in wages and benefits. Those jobs include three groups: brewers and importers; independent beer distributors; and licensed retailers.
The number of breweries in Connecticut has grown significantly since 2011, when the state had 16 breweries, according to the Brewers Association, which said the state had about 90 operating brewers by year-end 2018.
A few dozen entrepreneurs are currently seeking to open new breweries in the state based on the number of Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau permits pending in Connecticut.
Nationally, the beer industry, the nation’s most popular alcoholic beverage in terms of sales, supports more than 2 million jobs and contributes over $328 billion to the U.S. economy.
Data in the study was compiled by independent economics firm John Dunham & Associates Inc., of Brooklyn, N.Y., which used data collected from private companies, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.
